Character History:
Although nothing is known of Hange’s childhood, her story begins during her days as a new recruit of the Survey Corps: a company of trained men and women meant to kill the monsters that have trapped humanity within three fifty-meter walls. These monsters are called Titans and for centuries they have fed on humans and slaughtered them without the need too. Humanity fled into those walls and no one knows what lied on the other side. The scouting legion was made for the sake of fighting these monsters in an attempt to reclaim back humanity’s freedom but unfortunately, this was no simple task. Not only was this job considered suicide, it wasn’t necessarily seen as an act of bravery or a means of salvation. To the people, they were nothing more than a bunch of soldiers who wasted their taxes and sent themselves off to get eaten. Without anything to show for their efforts, there really wasn’t any hope left for them. New recruits were hard to come by but desperately needed. The mortality rate for being a member was way too high for anyone’s liking, most people never even survived their first trip outside the walls. That being said, there were still individuals who joined motivated by their desire to see the outside world or to avenge the deaths of their fallen friends or loved ones. Whatever motivated Hange to join is unclear but it is obvious that she shares a great curiosity of the outside world and she full heartedly believes that humanity was not meant to be imprisoned behind walls. To her, the world was too vast and expansive to be living within walls and their true paradise would only come if they were free from their prison. This fueled her passion for years to come.

Her first appearance in the series is a meeting between Levi and his gang of misfits. during her time as a new recruit in the Survey Corps. While they were trying to be inconspicuous in their attempt at stealing something from one of the captains at the time, Hange approached them in a very friendly manner curious to know where they had learned their fighting techniques that had allowed them to defeat a Titan earlier that day. The group was known as a trio of misfits because of where they came from called the Underground: a grotesque city underneath the luxurious capital ridden with disease, filth, and criminals. Hange didn’t seem to particularly care where they came from, she was never one to judge people by their past or their place in society. They were all equals under the tyranny of the Titans. This also went for age. She is capable of respecting the notion that some kid could be either better than her or smarter than her and she always listens to anyone willing to put up a good fight for humanity with an open mind. She treats the new recruits later on the same way, knowing that everyone has their talents and should be respected. She was probably the only person in the Corps that had approached them willingly and without judgment. The buzz had gotten around that they had killed a Titan and it simply caught her interest hoping that Levi would divulge some sort of advice for slaying them. Levi didn’t want to speak with her and even found her enthusiasm for the subject creepy but she meant no harm. Hange had always been an enthusiastic being especially with the things she’s interested in. Some might consider her loud personality overbearing but she also has the gift of blending into a situation in the sense that even if she has annoyed the person she’s talking to, a well put word here or there or phrase relieves the tension. She’s accustomed to dealing with unhappy people and plays along with their jokes regardless of how strange they might be. She still has quite the dark side, however, with a temperament that can easily get out of hand. During this time, Hange was fueled by hatred knowing that as long as the Titans lived, they would never know what was outside those walls. The rest of the gang, Farlan Church and Isabel Magnolia were mildly won over by her kindness because they had not been treated nicely since they arrived here unwillingly. In her attempt to befriend them, she even offered them candy (a commodity in their world) despite their apparent distrust towards her. Hange didn’t let herself be put off just because some of them were a little rude or even cold towards her. She left smiling. That’s just the type of person she is, vibrant and courageous without a fear of speaking to others who don’t seem to want to speak to her. She’s aware the world is a miserable place but she doesn’t want to feed more into it so she tries her best to see the brighter outlook of things. She is a very sociable person, unafraid to speak or to listen.

As far as her time in the Survey Corps goes, Hange proved to be a great soldier. Her skills eventually got her the position as the leader of the fourth squad but her real gift was her scientific background. Although there wasn’t a research group within the scouting legion, she ran all the experiments for the sake of learning more about their enemies. Her squad assisted her yet spent more time worrying after their squad leader and making sure she kept herself alive than actually helping. Her enthusiasm and fearlessness had her in several situations where her second in command definitely had to do a bit of saving once in a while. It wasn’t that she was careless, she was just too much for all of this. Getting close to monsters that most people try to avoid just wasn’t ‘normal’ yet Hange loved it. Perhaps the most outstanding attribute that separated her from the rest was her reasoning and ideology that has fueled her forward to continue her research. While most soldiers found that anger and hatred towards the titans seemed to fuel their fight, Hange learned that anger had done nothing for humanity. According to her, continuing their approach of anger and hate had not worked so therefore a new approach could possibly offer more insight- a ray of hope where none had existed before. While most would consider thinking about Titans in a caring manner to be traitorous, Hange was respected. Her methods were unorthodox but it managed to give the Survey Corps a decent amount of information that they had not known before. Hange had taken her role very seriously openly showing concern for the Titans. Let it not be said that she cares more for the Titans than she does of humanity because it’s quite the opposite. Although she is known to tell a Titans she’s about to slaughter that she will make their ends quick and painless, not once did she ever make them more important than humanity.

Before this period, humanity's greatest fear came true with the breaching of the farthest wall. A Titan taller than the walls themselves appeared for the first time and with a single blow made a large hole that allowed the Titans to pass through. This Titan would be known as the Colossal Titan. Devastation and panic reigned and it forced humanity to push back towards the inner cities that were still available. Not only did it cause a strain on the people, but on the government as well. With land lost, people were now crowded and that meant there were now food shortages and the always looming threat that the walls could be breached yet again. It was now a priority to regain that territory and unfortunately, for all the recruits that were forced to fight, the land was not reclaimed and only about twenty-five percent of the men and women returned. The Survey Corps had lost yet another battle and humanity suffered for the next couple of years.

Her second appearance involved the attempts to capture Titans for the sake of experimenting with them. The commander of the Survey Corps ordered Levi and his squad to assist Hange in capturing a live specimen in order for her research to ensue but it proved to be too active and it was ultimately killed. Despite her fixation for Titans, she shed no tears because again, she understood that humanity was always first. Their failure was not in vain, during this altercation they found a notebook of a long-fallen Survey Corp member that had been lost in action claiming that a Titan had spoken to a him before it had eaten him. This prompted Hange to request the capture and study of Titans by her commander Erwin Smith. The request was approved and Hange became the very proud owner of two Titans she named Sonny and Bean respectively. It wasn’t long after this that the walls were breached again this time in another section of the town that the recruit Eren Jeager first transformed into a Titan and laid havoc to the other Titans. He was captured and Hange attended his trial where most individuals considered the boy a threat. When the Scouting Legion convinced everyone to leave the boy in their care (thanks to a well planned beat-down by Captain Levi), Hange rejoiced. This couldn’t come at a better time, not long after this, someone murdered her captured titans in order to keep her from finding any fruitful information from them. Thankfully, the capture of Eren Jeager meant she not only had a Titan to experiment with, but someone that could be mildly controlled. She asked Eren for his permission and he agreed. This was a dream come true. She believed Eren would help them gain the upper hand of this war and perhaps even answer all of their unsolved problems.

Keeping Eren alive and away from others became quite the difficult task. For some reason, the Survey Corps had every reason to believe that someone was out to get the boy and that meant experimenting on him was slow. A small incident involving Eren and a teaspoon occurred before Sonne and Bean were maimed. It appeared to Hange that the boy could only transform if he had a clear objective in his mind. This prompted the Survey Corps to actually prove Eren’s usefulness to the court that had preferred he be put down in order to appease whatever tensions had been made. This led to an excursion outside of the safe zones under the guise of creating a supply route. Its true motive was to capture whoever it was that wanted Eren dead but this was only known amongst the people that were protecting Eren, the commanding officer, and Hange herself. Sure enough, the infamous female titan appeared and slaughtered several of the members finally capturing Eren and placing him in her mouth. The incident ended with a friend of Eren known as Mikasa Ackerman becoming involved and helping Levi reclaim the boy unfortunately wounding himself in the process. The recruits returned home and the real purpose for this mission was made clear. If Eren could turn into a Titan, what was to say that someone else had done the same and that they were on the wrong side? With the help of a recruit and a good friend of Eren’s named Armin Arlert, they concluded that the person responsible for the slaughter of Sonne and Bean and the human identity of the female titan was another recruit who had joined the Military Police named Annie Leonhart. Their next mission was to capture the girl without leading the Military Police on just in case there were still others involved in the treason. They were stationed inside wall Sina, the most inner city of the three so their presence had to be kept secret. This concluded as an intervention where Armin came to her and asked her for help claiming that they wished for her assistance in hiding Eren. Unfortunately, she saw through his trick and he confronted her prompting her to transform and the Survey Corps to attack. Eren again transformed and they finally defeated her but she covered herself in an unbreakable crystal before they could capture her and Hange had no choice but to have her transported somewhere for safe keeping until she could be extracted. The battle between the two Titans left a crack on one of the walls bringing to light a new horror: there were titans within the walls that were supposed to be protecting humanity. Before Hange could react the leader of a recently rising ‘cult’ of sorts named Pastor Nick came forward and pleaded for the soldiers to prevent sunlight from hitting the titans face. After the task was completed, Hange made no hesitations to find answers out of this man but he refused to cooperate. The insufferable man not only claimed that this was none of their business but that the Survey Corps was a plague to humanity.

Now, it’s important to point out that Hange could be a very reasonable human being and despite how she’s always in quite a good mood, the girl has her limits. In this case, once her limit is breached, she can be quite the loud and violent individual. Passionate in many ways, she found Pastor Nick’s behavior an outrage. Considering how many friends and comrades she had lost to the Titans for the sole purpose of keeping every single person within the walls safe, to say it wasn’t their business was just ridiculous. Seeing that the Pastor would not cooperate, she grabbed the man and dangled him over the edge of the fifty foot wall making it simple: he talks or she lets him go. Again, he crossed that threshold and Hange was never one for mercy. Despite the threat, he didn’t speak but Hange didn’t kill him. It was obvious this was bigger than they previously thought so she kept him alive for now but never out of their sight. Things started going downhill from there, whatever Pastor Nick was hiding, it was huge and people didn’t want the Survey Corps involved. Eren was moved into protective custody in a remote location in attempts to keep them off of their trail. Hange was left supervising Pastor Nick. During this time, however, Titans appear within the walls and the Survey Corps is moved to mobilize. Although Hange stayed with Nick, she eventually went to meet up the rest of the Levi’s squad where it seemed that one of the recruits had gone back to his hometown only to find that it had been deserted and found the Titan that had appeared on top of the recruits home. It was disfigured and couldn’t move and she concluded that this wasn’t just a Titan, it was the boys mother. This brought a new truth to the survey corps considering how if humans were titans, they had been killing people all this time. She didn’t hesitate to report back to her Commander only to find that Erwin had been injured during the battles. He lost his arm and in front of him and Levi, Hange gave them this horrible news. Needless to say, it wasn’t exactly a good thing. The main priority now was Eren’s safety, Levi was given his new team and were sent away to a cottage to protect Eren, they were certain the boy was the next target. During this period, Hange experimented with Eren putting his Titan through several tests in order to figure out his intelligence, capabilities, and limits in actually being in this form. She learned it was draining on him and his control varied. Needless to say, she got rather carried away, enjoying this work to the point of exhausting the teenager and forcing the experimentations to take a break. She had been trying to find out whether Eren could also harden his skin like the female Titan had done. She assumed this was the same technique that had allowed the Titans within the walls to actually create the walls in the first place. Unfortunately, Eren couldn’t pull this technique off. The more she exerted him, the smaller his Titan form became and he seemed to waiver less control over his actions. Sure, not a lot was answered but it was definitely a move forward. The friendship between Levi and herself was very apparent when Levi showed his disappointment. He gave Eren a few words that weren’t quite understood and Hange happily translated the man’s words. Despite Levi and Eren both sharing in the same disappointing gloom, Hange kept an optimistic outlook. Things could only get better since they had been down for far too long anyway.

Despite their best attempts, Pastor Nick was brutally murdered. He never said a word to the Survey Corps and by the way he had been tortured before death, Hange assumed they had been looking for information on Eren’s whereabouts. Hange was the one who found his body tortured and maimed and after confronting Erwin about the incident, she felt responsible for his death. She was livid, capable of even talking back to her commanding officer without a care for consequence. Sure, the guy had kept some valuable information from them but he had been helpful enough. At least he had a conscious to know when to open his mouth if it meant they would be hurt. That being said, she suspected foul play and that the Military Police was involved. With Levi at her side after making sure Eren was moved to another safe located they moved into action, kidnapping the two policemen who had been guarding the crime scene in order for them to torture the two.

Hange was accustomed to torturing Titans and found it rather painful to do always sobbing uncontrollably whenever she had to do it. She had never tortured a human before but she was all up for it. These men had tortured an innocent man making them monsters far more horrible than the Titans they were supposed to be raising their weapons against. Partnered with her old friend Levi, she was quite enthusiastic about learning how to do a successful torture. She even forgot to interrogate the man before pulling out his nails. When the man actually stopped screaming and managed to inform her about her mistake, she figured it was too late to stop now so she would ask him questions after she was done pulling out the rest. She turned to Levi and asked if that made sense and he agreed. Cynical? Definitely, but it’s all for a good cause. She wasn’t nervous in the least claiming that she would do her best even if she had never tried this before. She wasn’t exactly hesitant considering she had openly volunteered to begin and had decided on starting with his finger nails in the first place while Levi was obviously the experienced one. Hange wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and do the unthinkable if it meant getting answers or getting one over the enemy. She has very strong convictions and nothing is short of saving lives so everything was potentially acceptable even if it meant killing a man. They were at it for some time until Levi figured if they wouldn’t talk, there was no need to use discretion. A good beat down later and he managed to get the information out of him

One of them divulged that the girl that they had known as Christa was actually Historia, an illegitimate daughter to a wealthy member of what appeared to be a very secret organization whose sole purpose was to keep the information about the Titans hidden. He also made it clear that the man everyone thought of as their king was only a figurehead. Historia’s father was the real king and that automatically made her the rightful heir to the throne. The enemies of the Survey Corps was growing and now their fight wasn’t with huge monsters but actual people who were trying to prevent the potential freedom that existed for the people outside of these walls. A plan was devised for Historia to take the throne and Levi practically threatened her to do it. Now all they needed to do was make this current king renounce his throne. She agrees and the plan goes that they would offer Eren and Historia to the police in order for the rest of the squad to capture the lot. Unfortunately, they’re plans are interrupted and the operation goes south with the involvement of Kenny Ackerman, a serial killer working for the Military Police. They had used some merchants as a cover making it seem as if they had been the ones holding the two but their ruse had been seen through. The merchants were murdered by the police and Kenny and Erwin was blamed for their deaths sprouting the ultimate distrust towards the Survey Corps that ended with Erwin being taken to jail and the legion being ‘disbanded’. Before he was taken away, however, he passed on his commanding seat to Hange, making her the new Commander. Although nervous about the change and seeing Erwin be taken away, she kept her optimism and even more so now that they were hers to command. Whatever nerves or doubts she felt then she never made them clear and she wouldn’t for the rest of the events to come. Her resolve strengthened and in a sense, now she could do things her way.

Her next move was to keep what allies they had still on their side because at this rate, being part of a group that had been labeled criminals meant they couldn’t smoothly move about the cities. Levi’s face was on every wanted poster in the city and Hange had every motion of letting the people they had been protecting with their lives know the truth. After the merchants had been killed, there was still a hunt by the police for the son of the merchant which Hange had rescued and kept under her protection. They managed to get people and reporters of that district to witness first hand the horrors that the Military Police were committing all for the sake of keeping some boy’s silence. This won people back in their favor but it pissed off their enemies, Hange had to fight to protect the merchants son even dodging a rifle and destroying an entire squad. When you spent most of your life defeating Titans, people are just a piece of cake.

Abilities/Special Powers:
- Abnormal Speed
While Hange is as normal as they come, she has been known to be a lot faster than the average human. She can apparently dodge bullets and get the upper hand on an enemy while the blast is still taking place.

- Abnormal Intelligence
Although this is probably not a real special ability, she has apparently been able to figure out things about the Titans that centuries of humanities existence has never been able to divulge. She is an excellent plotter, even showing skills superior to Erwin's and even if her plans fail, her back up plans work flawlessly.

Third-Person Sample:
When Erwin had told her to leave his apartment, she almost wanted to tell him to come with her. For an instant she was willing to challenge his pride and tell him that for once, sacrificing his life wasn't worth it. Instead, she had kept her mouth shut and had left when he told her so. That had always been the way he was, self sacrificing to the foot of the word and she was powerless to the hand they had been played. His fate was sealed and the moment she shut the door, she knew that what hope he had walked out the door along with her. She had kept a straight face and for once had kept her mouth shut. She didn't turn to look back until she was far along the stone street easily pin-pointing his apartment window over the rest. She had a very bad feeling in the pit of her stomach, a looming sensation that this was probably going to be the last time she saw him. She took a deep inhale.

Soon, the Military Police would arrive and drag him into custody with all of his sacrifices ignored by humanity; the same people he had given his entire life for. He would be locked away in some dungeon where she was sure they would beat him until he couldn't stay awake. They would taunt him, torture him, belittle him to no end just because he had been who he was. Just because he had dreamed of a freedom these bastards never wanted for their people. The world would be told that the Survey Corps would die with him but Hange knew better. Humanity still had a Commander to help them to their freedom and she was more than capable of heading the call Erwin had proposed to her.

When Erwin had made her the new Commander of the Survey Corps, she hadn't reacted properly now that she thought about it. Her eyes had widened, her tone had been questioning, but she had been in a state of shock that had turned her almost monotone heading his last orders without any question. Their last conversation was brief, she hadn't wanted to leave him but she knew this was for the best. Even she understood what playing the passive part could do for them once they found a way to tell the people the truth. He had told her only what she needed to know and had left the rest to her. Now the responsibility to pull them forward was in her hands. Hange couldn't imagine what Levi would think once she told him the news or if the rest of the people left would even believe it, but she hoped they didn't see Erwin's situation as a bad omen. Hange was used to losing, things never went their way and this was no exception. The odds were always against them and they knew what defeat tasted like. The beautiful advantage of losing all the time was that they knew exactly what to do to try and prevent it. If there was something Hange prided herself in it was the fact she never made the same mistake twice. In order to be strong you had to be able to learn from your mistakes and Erwin knew Hange was capable of doing this. She was a formidable leader. She wasn't afraid to lose and that was what had gotten them what few victories they had.

The thing that made her dangerous was her conviction and how much like Erwin had been before, she was willing to do anything for what she believed was right.

Hange was certain Erwin's sacrifices would not be made in vain. No one's would be. With new-found determination, she pulled her hood up and started sprinting through an alley. First things first: secure their allies. Levi was more than trustworthy, despite their loss she was sure he could handle his side of the plan but as for her, she would make sure to win them back the people they were trying to protect.

"Look out, world." She muttered to herself. "We're coming to save you."

First-Person Sample:
FIRST EXPERIMENT || VIDEO ||

And here I thought I had seen everything.

[Hange had been out exploring when she came across what appeared to be some singing roses. She was whispering as she angled the communicator towards them. They seemed unaware of the girl lurking in the bushes. She is whispering, a very excited grin on her face as she turns the communicator back on herself.]

Singing flowers. I have just discovered singing flowers. [The bush she's hiding in rattles with excitement.] They have mouths- at least I think they're mouths because something seems to be moving around their petals that's allowing them to talk. They also have eyes, I saw those too... and they're talking! Plants can't talk! I'll end up running across a tree that can walk at this rate. [She turned the communicator back to the flowers for a moment before turning back to her. This time, her face was practically pressed against it.]

I heard about this world having a terrible reputation but these creatures are incredible! How could a world with talking roses be so evil? [The roses seem to know she's there now and have started bustling about themselves wondering what's hiding behind the bush. A very crazy look appears on her face, she's planning on getting her science on right about now.]

I'm going to take some. Not too many, but enough to fit in a nice big pot so that I can study them further. I'll be gentle, we can't have my next test subjects getting damaged now do we...
